The Saint Tryphon’s Day (Tryphon Zarezan)

Traditionally on this day vines аre pruned to get a good harvest in the fall, that's why Saint Trifon in Bulgaria is called Zarezan (in Bulgarian „who prunes the wines”).

On 14th February, in the morning the housewives cook chicken stuffed with rice and pour in wooden wine vessels homemade wine. They put everything along with homemade bread into a new woolen bag and the owner of the house with a bag over his shoulder goes to the vineyards. All the men of the village gather there. They pour the vines with the wine they have brought . After pruning the vines, all gather and choose the “king of the vine”.
