Fat Tuesday

Fat Tuesday (French Mardi gras) marks the end of “the week of seven fat days.” After that day begins the Lent when Christians are invited to “eat lean” and tо abstain from eating meat. Fat Tuesday is a moment of general hilarity incarnated in the carnival.

The date of Fat Tuesday is not constant. It changes in accordance with the date of Easter.

In the folk tradition Fat Tuesday is also the day when you eat pancakes or the famous “Carnival cakes.” Children mask and / or collect from their neighbors in the village eggs, sugar, flour, etc., to make cakes or pancakes which are eaten in the late afternoon.
