The celebration of the flowering of the peonies is a ritual in Bulgaria related to the area of Ludogorie which is the only area of the protected wild peony. This festival pays tribute to the beauty and the symbolism of the peony in the Bulgarian traditions and folklor. At the beginning of May, hundreds of singers, dancers and spectators flock in the red sea of thousands of blooming peonies. The holiday has become a symbol of Bulgaria and has acquired the dimensions of an International Folklore Festival for the Balkan peoples.
